On 19 October, our CO went for a briefing of all COs by Monty, and he passed it on to us. Monty said there would be a dogfight for ten days. He explained how the battle would be fought and was confident of the result. When we were told this on 22 October, when all leave was cancelled, there was a tremendous state of enthusiasm and morale was terrific. We had never had an army commander who gave us such a message. Our chaps were pretty good, and will do what they are told, and do it even better when they know what they are supposed to be doing.
